SERVICE BY SEA
United States To New Zealand
INTEREST IN AMERICA PA AUCKLAND, Dec. 13. The American President Line is definitely interested in the possibility of sending passenger ships to Australia and New Zealand on regular or semi-regular services, Mr J. R. Millar, a partner in the Dollar Shipping Line and the American President Line, said today. He is a through passenger in the Aorangi, whose departure for Vancouver has been delayed until tonight.
Mr Millar said' that since the President Line began looking into the matter the outlook had been changed by a recent decision of the United States Supreme Court in which the United States Maritime Commission was instructed to return to the company,'stock it appropriated during the war valued at
67,000,000 dollars. With that stock the company was now in a.. -- position to expand its interests. Ship passenger traffic to the Far East was declining, and' the diversion of one or two liners to the Pacific was being considered by the company. Everything depended on the international situation. The United States Government wanted many big liners now nearing completion.
It has been announced that the Aorangi will be withdrawn in January unless the Canadian and Australian Governments join with New Zealand in subsidising the service.
