Brilliant Quarter-mile Swim NEW OTAGO RECORD When John Jarvis, of the Kiwi Club, scored his eighth title success at the Otago swimming championships at the Tepid Pool last night by winning the 440 Yards Junior Boys Freestyle in omin 16 l-ssec he lowered his own Otago record by 6sec. His time was only 2 3-ssec outside the New Zealand record established by W. M. Amos, of Auckland, in 1948. and had he had anyone to extend him he would probably have established new figures. His performance was Bsec faster than his Otago senior record, established last week. Miss Fay Tremaine (Kiwi) also registered her eighth success when she won the 100 Yards Girls’ Medley (under 14) in 90 2-ssec. Three of her titles were won in the junior girls' (under 17) section and the other five in the under 14 class. Although Colin Reid (Kiwi) has not had much opposition, he has swum w r ell to gain four titles in the under 14 boys' class, his win last night being achieved in the 100 Yards Boys’ Medley (under 14), while he swam second to his promising clubmate. A. Familton, in the 75 Yards Boys Breaststroke (under 14), the latter being a newcomer to championship competition.

Miss Hazel Forsyth (Kiwi) won the 100 Yards Women’s Butterfly title, and B. E. Tremaine (Kiwi) the men’s event, but the times were slow, the competitors all being new to this style of swimming. The Alex. Greig Shield for the championship aggregate has again been won by the Kiwi Club with 282 points, Dunedin being runners-up with 99 points, Kaikorai third with 35, and University next with 27 points. 100 Yards Boys’ Medley (under 14). Colin Reid (Kiwi) 1. Time, lmin 51 2-ssec. 100 Yards Women’s Butterfly—Miss H. Forsyth (Kiwi) 1, Miss M. Wilson (Kiwi) 2, Miss B. Moore (Dunedin) 3. Time, lmin 35 4-ssec. Won by three yards, seven yards between second and third. 220 Yards Men’s Butterfly.—B. E. Tremaine (Kiwi) 1, R. J. Isaacs (Kiwi) 2. Time, 3min 33sec. Won by five yards. 440 Yards Junior Boys’ Freestyle.—J. Jarvis (Kiwi) 1, D. Nisbet (Dunedin) 2, D. Trainor (Kiwi) 3. Time. smin 16 l-ssec —an Otago record. Jarvis took charge from the start, and leaving the 100 yards mark behind in 67sec, led by 12 yards from Nisbet. At the 220 yards distance Jarvis had increased his lead to 15 yards, his time being 2min 35 2-ssec. Jarvis forged further ahead, and finished with over 100 yards to spare from Nisbet, Trainor being about 60 yards back third.
