PRE-EMPTIVE WOOL BUYING
Sir,—As a resull; of the recent approach made by the United States of America for the acquisition of 100,000,0001 b strategic stockpile of wool by the above-mentioned method, I am interested in the following question. Why does the United States of America continue their high tariff on foreign wool finer than 44’s? I understand these tariffs were introduced in the first place to protect USA local growers, and it would now appear that the high world price levels for wool would no longer make this protection necessary. As the thought behind pre-emptive buying was to protect the democracies against internal commodity Inflation, it seems obvious that the removal of this tariff would considerably assist both the USA private consumers and the wool-selling countries considerably. Is there any authority in New Zealand who could answer my question?—l am, etc.. Wool.
