SOUTHLAND WOOL SALE

Prices On Par With Timaru Realisations

PA INVERCARGILL, Dec. 13.. As expected, Southland records toppled when the first main wool sale of the 1950-51 season was held at Invercargill today. Last year’s first sale record price of 70d for merino fleeces was almost doubled when a New Zealand mill paid 132|d for three bales of super quarterbred wool. The lowest price was 54d for merino locks. The estimated average for the sale was about 9s a pound.

The official report states: “The first main Invercargill sale of the 1950-51 series was held today, when a catalogue of 30,228 bales was submitted to a representative bench of buyers. This was the first occasion for many years that Invercargill has had a main sale before Christmas. Because of the exceptionally good conditions during shearing, brokers had no difficulty in filling their quotas by mid-November.

“ The mild seasonal weather was reflected in the sound condition of the wool and the lack of tender wool offered. Generally speaking, both the ewe and hogget wools were more robust than usual. Conspicuous among the offering was an attractive display of both ewe and hogget wool from Eastern Southland and the Gore district. This wool met with keen competition. Most of the offering consisted of good-quality crossbred hogget wool, which was. as usual, characteristic of Southland. It was noticeable that there was a greater proportion of shorn hogget wool included in the offering. The advantage of thinning was apparent and was reflected in the prices realised for the lots. “ Competition was widespread and came mainly from Continental buyers for bellies, pieces and oddments, while Bradford was strongly in evidence for crossbred fleeces, including hogget wools, with America competing keenly for suitable lines. As usual, local mills competed strongly for all classes suitable for their trade. A feature of the sale was that wool showing exceptionally good length was in keen demand, this being reflected in the higher prices paid for such lines, particularly crossbred ewe and hogget wool. “Taken over all, the prices were on a par with those paid at Timaru, except that values or 50 count and over were firmer.” The range of prices is:—
