NORTHERN ACCESS
Work Expected To Start Early Next Year
Further survey work is being carried out by the Ministry of Works in Dunedin on the route for the new highway giving access to the city from the north by way of Waitati, the Leith Valley, Pine Hill and the The surveys are being made at present in the vicinity of Pine Hill Peak. Work on the construction of the new motorway is expected to begin early next year, and a start will probably be made with the widening and improvement of the road between Waitati and the Leith Saddle near Pigeon Flat, which was formed about 20 years ago during the depression, but was not completed. The construction of the highway into Dunedin from the city boundary at Pine Hill road is conditional upon the acceptance by the Government of the offer of the City Council to pay £75,000 as the city’s share in financing the new route, and the work being declared by the Minister of Finance, the Prime Minister, Mr Holland, and the Minister of Works, Mr Goosman, as of both national and local importance. The City Council also has to raise a loan under statute, without a poll of ratepayers, to pay its share.
