HORORATA WINNER

Brother To Ned Kelly The winner of the only race run at the Hororata centennial meeting on Saturday, Dan Kelly, is a brother to Ned Kelly and Peculate, being by Defaulter from Girouette. a Weathervane mare from Entre Nous, by Boniform from Secret Link, tracing back to Traducer. Girouette also left Stormy Petrel, Lexia and Master Bobs. Last season Dan Kelly had one start, finishing near the rear of a novice field over six furlongs at Ashburton in June. In five starts this season he had not been placed. On Saturday he was in the middle of the field when the six leading horses fell approaching the home turn. He missed the trouble and was-left in front. His only challenger was Sunda, who had to take a wide course to avoid the mix-up. Dan Kelly is owned by Mr J. M. Samson, and while it does not look as though he will set the Thames on fire, he may prove useful around the smaller meetings. Reminders Nominations for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Cup meeting close at 5 p.m. today. Nominations for the Waikouaiti, Oamaru and Kurow meetings close at 5 p.m. today. Acceptances for the gallops and withdrawals from the trotting events at the Tapanui Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday close at 6 o’clock this evening. From Trivet Scuttle, who was an easy winner of the Trial Handicap at Beaumont on Saturday in his first start for the season, is a member of the famous Fireside family, being by Salmagundi from Trivet. Last season he could score only four placings in 11 races, but his effort on Saturday suggests that he may yet live up to the family reputation. Improving Form Third to Scuttle and Silver Standard in the Trial Handicap on the opening day at Beaumont and winner of the Novice ■ Handicap yesterday, Chatswin may add to her record in the near future, especially around the smaller meetings. Her only previous placing was a poor fourth to Koxinga, Cherry Prince and Purple Sage at Wyndham. She is a three-year-old filly by Chatsworth from Merry Vale, a Gay Circle mare from Cherry Queen, by Diacquenod. First Win in Open Class The three-year-old gelding Regoli made a successful entry into open company by winning the Flying Handicap at the Waipa Club’s meeting on Saturday. Regoli had scored four wins in succession in hack class, so that he has now gained five firsts in succession. In Saturday’s race he finished well to win easily after being a trifle slow away and ridden in behind the pacemakers. Regoli is by the Colorado Kid stallion Royal Arch, who was imported from England four years ago. The dam of Regoli, Symbol, won six races in five seasons before she was retired. She was by Gascony (whose second dam was by Martian) from Symballo, by Psychology from Symbolism, by Symington from Amphora, by Amphion from Sierra, by Springfield. Regoli has been nominated for the Shaw Handicap at Ohinemuri on Saturday, but as he has already been penalised 51b in the rich Railway Handicap at Auckland for Saturday’s win, he may be missing from the Paeroa event.
