AMATEUR ATHLETICS

Form Of Meetings Discussed A recent resolution of the NZAAA (Otago Centre) that junior track events up to one mile be combined with the senior and run in four grades may soon be rescinded. Instead, the cerftre may revert to .the practice of holding junior events and limiting the seniors to perhaps two grades. Several delegates present at the meeting of the centre last night said that though they had approved the motion they had not, at the time, realised th implications. Junior athletes, they had since found, would be deprived of the opportunity of creating new records at graded meetings since they would be competing against seniors and consequently be out of class. The chairman, Mr J. G. Barnes, said that before the centre could change the rules a notice of motion was required. He suggested that the matter be referred back to the Sports Committee and that meetings of four grades continue in the meantime until the notice of motion was brought before the next meeting. Members agreed that a special handicap two-mile race be held for juniors on Saturday so that P Sidon, of the Caversham Club, might have the opportunity of attempting to lower he Dominion record for that distance. A special women’s shot putt event will also be held for the benefit of Mrs Ringenbergs, the former Latvian champion, now living in Invercargill, who will be present at the meeting. The Sports Committee vvas given permission to hold a meeting if successful in arranging a visit by some of the overseas athletes attending the Canterbury Centennial Gaines.
