ASH DISPOSAL

Appeal To St. Kilda Residents “Why don’t they put their ashes down the garden? ” asked Cr B. C. Adam at the meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council last night. This was his solution of the problem of giving the council’s staff sufficient time to carry out tar sealing work in the borough:—ash collecting, it was stated,

was taking up too much time. Cr Adam commented that he had not put an ash can out for nine years. Cr T. D. B. Roy said Gisborne residents were restricted to one ash can a week, and suggested a similar restriction for St. Kilda. This was strongly opposed by Cr J. R. F. Braithwaite, who said larger families like his—a total of five —needed more than one ash can. The problem was finally passed to the town clerk. The honorarium for the new Mayor, Mr A. E Finnie, was set at £IOO a year The honorarium is the same as that granted during the last three years to Mr W. Rutherford, the previous Mayor. The Deputy Mayor, Cr N. H Shepof the council on the Dunedin Metropolitan Milk Board. Cr E. Longworth and the town clerk, Mr J. V. Trezise, were appointed to represent the council at the conference of the New Zealand Municipal Association in Christchurch during March. Cr Longworth was authorised to discuss the question of extra street lighting near Tahuna Park with the controllers of the speedway racing track.
