NEWSPRINT SHORTAGES

Concern In Australia V SYDNEY, Dec. 9. An indication of the concern felt by the Australian press over newsprint shortages is given in an announcement on the front page of the Sydney Morning Herald today, which states, “A reduction in this paper’s circulation and contents is inescapable.” From next Saturday sales will be limited to readers who buy the paper daily. The Herald says that, though it holds long-term contracts for the supply of newsprint and has Sought spot tonnage wherever possible at extremely high prices, grave doubts have arisen whether a large part of the ordered newsprint will be received. Supplies are months behind schedule, ana British and Scandinavian mills, faced with interruption to pulp supplies, are finding difficulty in fulfilling their obligations.
