MODERN JET FIGHTERS

Australian Air Force NZPA—Copyright CANBERRA, Rec. 6.20 p.m. Dec. 10. Australia has bought from Britain 36 of the most modern jet fighters in the world—the Meteor VIII. Most of the new planes are expected to arrive early in the New Year. The Prime Minister, Mr R. G. Menzies, announced the purchase of the planes last night. He did not indicate the cost, but it is believed to be about £5,500,000. The Meteor’s striking power, speed and manoeuvreability would greatly increase Australia’s air strength, Mr Menzies said. They would be used first to re-equip No. 77 Squadron, now operating in Korea with Mustangs. Mr Menzies said the purchase of the jet fighters was only part of the Government’s plan to re-equip some sections of the RAAF.
