HAZARDOUS TRIP

Ketch Reaches Auckland

RETURN FROM ISLANDS PA AUCKLAND, Dec. 10.

The ketch, Soubrette, reached Auckland from Rarotonga today after a hazardous trip without auxiliary engines. The little ship was alternately becalmed and battered in heavy seas. serious damage was done.

The- Soubrette’s engines were damaged while cruising in the Cook Islands, and they could not be repaired there. The work will be done in Auckland before the ketch sails for Wellington and Picton. The skipper of the Soubrette is a Gilbert Islander, Mr “ Willie ” Schutz. Also in the crew are two New Zealanders, Mr D. Reader and Mr H. Holmes, and four Rarotongans. They left Wellington on July 20 and reached Rarotonga 22 days later. Whilst cruising around the islands they traded mainly in pearl shells. The approach of the hurricane season caused their return to New Zealand. The return journey took 24 days. The 40-foot ketch was built at Auckland in 1936.
