CONVICTION OF DRIVER

Magistrate’s Reluctance P.A. WELLINGTON, Dec. 8. Beatings while a prisoner of war were said in the Magistrate’s Court at Lower Hutt yesterday, to have caused a man to appear intoxicated. The man, Duncan John McCallum, aged 43, pleaded not guilty to being intoxicated in charge of a car and to driving negligently. Convicting him on the first charge, Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M., said: “ It is one of those unfortunate cases where the court is reluctant to find a man guilty. It takes almost a degree of courage to convict.” A fine of £lO was imposed, and McCallum’s driving licence was cancelled for six months. On the charge of driving negligently he was convicted and discharged.
