HEAT WAVE STRIKES SYDNEY

Rec. 10.15 p.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 8. A long-delayed heat-wave struck Sydney today with temperatures which went from 81.2 deg at 7 a.m. to 98 at 2 p.m. The morning was the hottest for four years, the reading of 88.8 at 9 a.m. being the highest since November 6. 1946. This evening, however, thunderstorms were making their appearance and cool, squally winds are expected to follow.

Nineteen people collapsed and the North Bondi Surf Club reported the greatest early morning crowd in the club’s history. Men shed their coats and women appeared in their briefest summer frocks. Fire brigades were continually on call to a record number of bush fires in the suburbs.
