STEEL FOR DOMINION

Australia’s Obligation NZPA —Copyright SYDNEY, Nov. 7. The Minister of Supply, Mr Howard Beale, told a deputation of ironworkers that Australia was under an obligation to export some steel to New Zealand in spite of the shortage for home consumption. He said that most of Australia's export steel went to New Zealand, but that the quantity exported was small in comparison with the total output. The exports in 1948 were 8 per cent, of the total output, and the export figure this year was about 6 per cent. The deputation, which included the Newcastle secretary of the Ironworkers’ Federation, Mr L. Schofield, the national president, Mr P. McHenry, and delegates from Lysaght’s Foundry, drew Mr Beale’s attention to the shortage of sheet bar steel which the Broken Hill Proprietary supplied to Lysaght's. resulting in a slowdown in Lysaght’s production, and asked for the stoppage of steel exports because of the shortage in home supplies.
