ONE OTAGO WIN
Dominion Amateur Wrestling Championships PA CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 26. Auckland was the first province to win a title when the New Zealand Amateur Wrestling Championships began at the Civic Theatre today. The winner was R. Merriott, in the light-weight section. Easjly the best bout of the day was, in the middle-weight section, between K. Mahoney (Wellington) and P. Fletcher (Auckland). Fletcher was the title holder, but Mahoney won on points. It was a fast bout, with both men switching their attacks rapidly, but being met by equally quick counters. In the heavy-weight section, J. Charlton (Wellington) and B. O’Connor JWest Coast, North Island) won both ' their matches. Charlton, who weighs considerably more than 20 stone, wrestled well, but had a hard tussle with J. Cheyne (Auckland), who was conceding about 9 stone. The Otago wrestler, J. Monaghan, won a bout in the second round of the middleweight section. In the results, the following abbreviations are used;—A., Auckland; H. 8., Hawke’s Bay: P. 8., Poverty Bay; Wai., Waikato; W., Wellington; W.C.N.1.. West Coast, North Island; C., Canterbury; 0., Otago. Unless otherwise stated, the bouts were won by a fall. Results:—
Fly-weight.—First round: R. Merriott (A.) beat E. Matthews (W.) on points. Second round: Matthews beat T. S. Kennedy (C.) on points. Third round: Merriott beat Kennedy on points. Bantam-weight.—First round: D. C. Boskell (C.) beat N. Clark (O.); D. Mudgway (W.C.N.1.) beat K. Ruby (W.) on points. Second <round: P. Rawlinson (A.) beat Clark; Ruby beat Boskell on points. Feather-weight.—First round: J. Armett (W.) beat W. Weston (Wai.) on points, M. J. Fusseil (C.) beat R. McGarva (H.8.P.8.), J. T. Rowe (W.C.N.1.) beat J. Henderson (W.) on points (a split decision). Second round: Armett beat G. Mariner (O.), Weston beat Fusseil on points, Henderson beat McGarva. Light-weight.—First round: L. Lye (Wai.) beat D. Kilgour (O.), W. Adams (W.) beat J. Mcßae (A.) on points (a split decision). Second round: G. Hobson (C.) beat Kilgour, Adams beat Lye. Welter-weight.—First round: G. Boric (A.) beat D. Lees (Wai.), L. J. Genet (C.) beat C. Teague (W) on points (a split decision). Second round: Teague beat Lees by default, Boric beat J. Hall ((X). Middle-weight. First round: K. Mahoney (W.) beat P. Fletcher (A.) on points, R. Stenhouse (C.) beat E. King (H.8.P.8.). Second round: J. Monaghan (O.) beat Mahoney, Fletcher beat Stenhouse.
Light-weight.—First round: A. Hollander (O.) beat B. Walker (A.) on points, R. W. Moir (C.) beat Walter (Wai.) on points. Second round: A. Sneddon (A.) beat Hollander, who retired with an injured leg; Walker beat Walter on points. Heavy-weight.—First round: J. Charlton (W.) beat J. Cooper (H.8.P.8.) on ooints, B. O’Connor (W.C.N.1.) beat D. C. Manson (C.). Second round: Charlton beat J. Cheyne (A.) on points, O’Connor beat Cooper on points.
