ANNIVERSARY DAY

More Uniform Observance CALEDONIAN SOCIETY’S MEETING A deputation from the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce presented its views concerning a more uniform observance of Otago’s Anniversary Day to the meeting of directors of the Caledonian Society held yesterday. Representatives of the Otago Early Settlers’ Association were also present. It was the opinion of members of the chamber that Otago should observe March 23 as a day on which anniversary celebrations should be held. If a sports day were held on March 23, school children participating in the gathering would come to realise the significance of the occasion. A suggestion that a procession depicting early days of the province be held from the Early Settlers’ Hall to where the sports gathering would be held was favourably received. Mr W. R. Brugh, representing the Early Settlers’ Association, said that citizens must make themselves “Anniversary Day-minded.” He would welcome the Caledonian Society holding a sports day on March 23. The sports would not draw people away from the celebrations held by the Early Settlers’ A ccnointinn The Caledonian Society directors said that they had very sympathetic feelings towards the chamber’s proposal. In 1948 2000 school children had taken part in a sports day, and it was a sight not to be surpassed. The society signified its intention of sending two delegates to a meeting convened by the chamber for August 3 next to consider the nature of a more uniform observance of Anniversary Day each year.
