PLEASANT SURPRISE

Polar Night At Maudheim NEWS FROM EXPEDITION Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, July 24. A message from the joint Antarctic expedition at Maudheim says the polar night has turned out a pleasant surprise. The expedition members expected that Princess Martha Land would be another home of blizzards with heavy snows, darkness and extreme cold, but so far there has been mostly still weather, a clear sky. and several hours of only slightly dimmed daylight, with the lowest temperatures 50 degrees fahrenheit below zero, and great and sudden fluctuations, and almost no snowfall since March. All members of the expedition are very healthy.
