Gramophone library

Arrangements have been completed by the city librarian for the opening of a gramophone library on August 4. Records have been purchased and catalogued. Membership of the library will be 2s 6d, and an initial borrowing fee of 5s will also be required. The hiring of records will be at the rate of 6d a record, or 2s 6d a week. Members of the library will be required to sign an agreement to replace any broken records. The Otago High Schools Board favours the holding of Anniversary Day in Otago oh March 23 and on no other day. This decision-was made at a meeting of the board yesterday, when Professor T. D. Adams and Mr R. S. M. Sinclair were appointed to attend a meeting convened by the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce to consider the question of more uniformity in the observance of Anniversary Day. School Rolls

On May 5, the end of the first school term, there were 176 schools in operation in Otago, with a total roll of 18,692, according to a report presented at the monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board yesterday. This was an increase of 489 over the first term of 1949. The average weekly roll was 18,473, an increase of 443 on 1949, the report stated, and the average attendance was 17,028, against 16,421 for the first term of 1949. Power Supply Interrupted

Because of a breax in the State Hydro-electric Department’s supply, power was off in Dunedin for more than 40 minutes yesterday afternoon.
