LULL AT WINGATUI

Trainers Leave For Riccarton

TEAM FOR AUSTRALIA

By Springfield Wingatui will be deserted for the next few weeks until after the Grand National meeting at Riccarton. Most trainers left this week for the South Canterbury Hunt meeting on Saturday, to be followed by the Christchurch Hunt and Grand National meetings. J. W. Pankhurst left yesterday for Oamaru on the first leg of his Australian trip. There has been little activity at Wingatui, frost making the tracks dangerous for fast work. The remainder of the Wingatui horses for Riccarton will leave next week. Pankhurst took Brutus, Kosher, Gold King and Liberty, a rising two-year-old colt by Gold Nib from Perfect Peace, to Oamaru. yesterday. Arrangements have been made to gallop these horses the reverse way there in preparation for their Australian campaign. Brutus and Gold King will probably have a run in the Brabazon Handicap at the Christchurch Hunt meeting and Kosher may make his first appearance in the Winter Cup. Liberty will be given a run in the two-year-old parade at Riccarton. Brutus has furnished into a grand type of colt and he has been striding out well in his work at Wingatui. The trainer’s son, J. D. Pankhurst, and the Riccarton horseman. C. McDonald, will accompany the team to do the riding. They will leave New Zealand on August 25 by the Monowai and return on the Wanganella in time to race at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Mr Barton will fly to Australia early in September to watch his team in action. Plans for All Hurry

All Hurry, who went a good race at Trentham, was left at Riccarton in the care of McDonald and he will be on hand for the Grand National meeting. No definite arrangements have been made for him after that, but it is likely that he will have an easy time. Pankhurst has left Western Front and a rising two-year-old colt by Timanova from Lavish at home, and they will be hacked about the roads.

A rising two-year-old filly by Ruthless from Ozel, ranking as a full-sister to Brutus, was railed south yesterday and she will join the Waitaki at Bluff. Bought by Mr Barton at the last Trentham sales, she will be raced by his brother in Melbourne, for whom she will be trained by the former New Zealander, Stan Piper.

R. Hcasley left on Wednesday for Washdyke with Master Galloway, Erin’s Smile, Tweedside, Stylus and an Admiral’s Luck colt, who will run in the two-year-old parade at Riccarton. R. J. Mackie left yesterday with Duvaals, a candidate for the Claremont Handicap at Washdyke tomorrow, and Weldrest, who will strip in splendid order for her immediate engagements. A rising two-year-old colt by Royal Chief from Spanish Maid, by Balboa from Miss Signal, a member of the same family as Signal Officer, Oscillate, Sir Garnish, Totolomai, Waitoru and others, accompanied the team. He is a fine type of youngster and should do well with a bit of age.

G. A. Feilding, who had the misfortune to lose Western Winner recently, has only Nullah and a rising two-year-old colt by Tiderace from Natty, the dam of a useful sort in Sage King, as well as Waac, in his team. Waac is the dam of the promising Lord Noddi, who was taken up again recently by D. J. McLeod. He has furnished well and he should more than pay his way next season. Jamell May Need Racing

F. Shaw plans to leave early next week for Riccarton with Jamell, Man o’ Kent and Roving Robin. Jamell looks well, but may need a race or two to bring him to his peak. He has filled out a lot during his spell, and provided he remains sound, he should do well in the major handicaps later in the spring. Shaw will have several additions to his team in the near future. Attainment, by Finis from Palantua, has done well during her let-up and she will be in good order for another preparation. A rising two-year-old full-brother is also due to come in soon, while a half-brother by Royal Style to Royal Tower is to continue his education with Shaw.

Royal Tower, surprise winner of the last Hazlett Gold Cup, has been put aside again for a while. There is nothing wrong with him. but he is being given every chance. He is still growing. The former Riccarton trainer, A. J. Griffin, has takfen the rising two-year-old colt by Royal Chief from Rose Illeana in hand.' He was purchased at the recent Trentham sales for 400gns. He ranks as a full-brother to Royal Venture and as a half-brother to Faites vos Jeux. Griffin win leave next week for Riccarton, where he will race Roman Son and Cherry Prince. The latter may need a race or two before the best is seen of him, but he has shown a fair measure of ability. Roman Son may contest the Christchurch Hunt Club’s Homeby Steeplechase before tackling the Grand National Steeplechase.

J. D. Pankhurst will ride Weldrest in her engagement at Washdyke tomorrow, and L. W. Hare will be on Duvaals, R. P. Langford on Erin’s Smile, and M. A. Skinner on Stylus.
