OPENING CEREMONY
Coates Memorial Church PA DARGAVILLE, May 27.
Coinciding with the anniversary of his death, on May 27, 1943, the official opening of the memorial church erected at Matakohe in memory of Mr J. G. Coates, former Prime Minister and member for the old Kaipara electorate for about 30 years, took place this afternoon. Prominent in a representative gathering were the Prime Minister, Mr Holland, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Fraser, Mrs Coates, members of Government departments and the Right Rev. W. J. Simkin, Bishop of Auckland. On arrival, the Prime Minister placed a wreath on Mr Coates’s grave. At the ceremony this afternoon, following the presentation of albums containing photographs of the church to Mr Holland and Mr Fraser, the Prime Minister unveiled a memorial and plaque at the church entrance. Mr Holland and Mr Fraser both delivered addresses.
Matakohe is situated in the Kaipara electorate and the memorial church overlooks Mr Coates’s old homestead.
