MORE APPRENTICES

PA WELLINGTON, May 16. Carpenters and joiners will be able to employ more apprentices in proportion to the number of their journeymen if a proposal recently discussed by the Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship Committee is approved. The suggestion is for a ratio of one to two or fraction of two instead of one to three or fraction of three. , ' . The Commissioner of Apprenticeship, Mr H. C. McQueen, said in a statement that the proposal had been referred to local committees and other organisations for their views. Mr McQueen said the committee found that about 18 per cent, of apprentices engaged since the apprenticeship order came into being had had the two years’ post-primary education requirement waived. It had asked local committees to be fairly strict in future in their interpretation of “exceptional cases.”
