REINSTATEMENT URGED

Capital And Corporal Punishment DUNEDIN SOCIETY’S OPINION The opinion that both capital and corporal punishment should be reinstated in view of the increase in crimes against women and children, is expressed in the fifty-first annual report of the Dunedin branch of the New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children. The report states that during the year 1006 cases received attention. Maintenance, social security benefits and money entrusted to the society for disbursement amounted to £2655 15s. The cases dealt with were those of domestic discord which led to separation and divorce, with their consequent problems connected with the custody and maintenance of the children. The report said that the Dunedin Marriage Guidance Council was doing excellent work and the society hoped that the council’s work would make an appreciable difference in the number of those cases.

During the year Mrs H. L. Gibson was elected a member of the committee and Mr J. D. Neil was appointed honorary auditor to the society.
