DIFFICULT POSITION
Trade Union Secretary PROVISIONAL TUC OFFICIAL PA CHRISTCHURCH, May 16. Although the secretary of the Canterbury Clothing Workers’. Union, Mr John Roberts, is provisional vicechairman of the Trades Union Congress, the union will not disaffiliate from the New Zealand Federation of Labour, nor will it join the Trades Union Congress. This was decided at a special meeting of the union held last night. This decision will mean that Mr Roberts will have to resign from his position on the TUC. About 200 members, or less than one-tenth of the total membership of the branch, attended the meeting. A resolution that the union leave the Federation' of Labour and join the TUC was defeated by a large majority. The meeting was addressed by the national secretary of the union, Mr £. B. Newton, Wellington, who is also a member of the National Council of the Federation of Labour.
Questioned regarding his position today, Mr Roberts said that his head was “ bloody but unbowed.” Otherwise he had no statement to make.
