STAFF SHORTAGE
Desperate Position The lack of consideration given to Dunedin in the allocation of immigrants was criticised by members of the Otago-Southland Manufacturers’ Association at the monthly meeting last night. It was felt that more attention should be paid to the needs of a city rather than to its size. Members pointed out that in the district there were five large woollen mills, which were being worked with skeleton staffs. The position was desperate, especially considering the essential nature of the industry. The loss in trade through the slow handling of goods was also referred to, one member stating that his firm s representative in Auckland had returned to a customer after several weeks only to find that the original orders had still to arrive. The goods had been sent out from Dunedin shortly after the order had been received.
