LABOUR DEMAND
Seasonal Work Now Ending
It is expected that the demand for labour will be substantially reduced within the next few weeks as more seasonal workers finish at freezing works in Otago. The supply of stock has been slackening off and Saturday mornings are not now worked. The works usually start to lay off staff about this time of the year and seasonal workers will fijl vacancies m winter jobs. . . There were 1459 vacancies for male workers in the Otago district at the end of April and 1822 vacancies for women. Building and construction trades have almost half of these unfilled positions. Hydro-electric works are included under construction and many men are required for this type of work. The clothing industry and woollen mills have the majority of the female vacancies.
