Dry Cleaning Fluid WORKER’S DEATH ENSUES PA INVERCARGILL, May 15. The first death in New Zealand from the effects of trichlorethylene, a drycleaning fluid, was investigated by the coroner, Mr C. G. G. Sinclair, at Invercargill today. He suggested that legislation be considered prohibiting the use of the “ semi-open ” method of dry cleaning with the fluid. Returning a verdict that death was due to sudden heart failure resulting from poisoning by trichlorethylene, Mr Sinclair added that failing the prohibition of the “ semi-open method," he thought that the room containing the installation should have first-class ventilation. As trichlorethylene was used in other industries, the possibilities of ill-effects through its use should be investigated immediately. The victim in this case was Alexander Bruce Hoggans, aged 25, single, of Herbert street, Invercargill. He died on May 6.
