Ten-inch Bolt Driven Into Rear Wheel Of Car
During the course of their travels, motor cars pick up an assortment of articles in their tyres including nails, tacks, glass and many other oddments. Recently a 10-inch bolt was “ collected ” by Detective L. D. Harrowfield in the rear wheel of his car when driving down the northern part of Oamaru’s shopping area. The first intimation Detective Harrowfield had of his misfortune was a loud explosion as the bolt penetrated his tyre and tube. As the wheel revolved the bolt banged against his rear mudguard until it was finally forced right into the tyre, the head of the bolt only showing. Needless to say, the tyre and tube became a total loss. The bolt, at the end of the penetration, is quite blunt, and it is thought that the front wheel of the car passed over it first, causing it to tilt upwards and drive into the rear wheel.
