FESTIVAL OPENS

OAMARU COMPETITIONS ENTRIES NUMEROUS Special to the Daily Times OAMARU. May 15. The fourteenth festival of the Oamaru Competitions Society was commenced this morning in the Opera House. Over 1500 entries have been received for the competitions, which will continue until Saturday afternoon. In addition to large local entries, there are contestants froni Wanganui, Hastings, and Lower Hutt in the north to Bluff in the south. The festival was officially declared open last night by the Mayor, Mr M. F. E. Cooney, who congratulated the society on the large entries received. He expressed thanks to the organisation for the work it was doing in fostering the spirit of competition amongst the younger generation, and also the hope that the competitions would prove a success. The main event on today’s programme was the South Island Reel o’Tulloch Championship under 16 years, which attracted 14 entries. This was won by Patricia Grenfell (Christchurch), with 86 points, followed by Josephine Peikens (Christchurch) with 85 points, and Cecilia Ford (Invercargill) with 84 points. On the eve of her departure for Australia, where she will reside, Miss Dorothy Cayford, New Zealand Dame Nellie Melba scholarship finalist, presented a bracket of songs. The president, Mr V. E. Doran, thanked Miss Cayford for her services to the society, and the Mayor wished her happiness in her new sphere. The Otago Championship Sailors Hornpipe, under 15 years, scheduled in the programme for 11.55 a.m. on Tuesday, has been advanced to 10.55 a.m. Results were:— Barefoot Dance, 16 years and under.
