Club Matches On June 10 RUGBY UNION’S DECISION A meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union last night adopted a recommendation from the Flag Committee that all club games should be played on June 10, the day of the second test match at Christchurch. Referees’ Rulings Arising out of a letter from the New Zealand Rugby Referees’ Association, the New Zealand Union has drawn the attention of unions to the following points raised by the New Zealand Referees’ Association:— (1) It is contrary to law 1 to have flags on top of goalposts and to allow the cross-bar to extend beyond the goalposts. (2) It has been ruled by the council that in the event of a hooker packing down with his feet crossed, under law 15 (1), the foot which is further from the player who is putting the ball into the scrummage is to be regarded as. the far foot. (3) The' following ruling was also given: After a penalty kick has been awarded, should a team wilfully waste time, the kick should be disallowed and the game restarted by a scrummage at the mark of the penalty. (4) Ankle tapping with the hand is not illegal. (5) A resolution by the conference of. referees that all referees should'deal severely with any players who deliberately collapse a scrummage was approved. It was decided to advise the Otago Referees’ Association accordingly. Scrummage Laws “ These rulings should be sent out immediately,” said Mr C. K. Saxton, when informed by the secretary, Mr E. S. Wilson, that no information had been received from the New Zealand Union concerning the binding of the front-row to prevent the collapsing of scrums. It was decided to write to the New Zealand Union asking for confirmation of the new scrummaging laws with respect to the binding of the front-row. Tour of Seddon Shield Districts The New Zealand Union advised that the Golden Bay-Motueka Union and the Otago Sub-unions had been granted a subsidy of £2OO each to enable a tour of the Seddon Shield unions to be undertaken. Match With Golden Bay Advice was received that the match between the Golden Bay representative team and the Otago Sub-untons’ team would be played on September 26, and it was decided that it should be played as a curtain-raiser to the WelingtonOtago game at Carisbrook, North-South Match The North Island-South Island match would be held at Auckland on September 23, the New Zealand Union advised.
