TANKER ABANDONED
Fire In Engine Room PASSENGERS AND CREW SAFE NZPA—Reuter—Copyright TOKIO, May 12. The American naval tanker, Shawnee Trail, rescued 40 men and 6 women from the lifeboats of the Norwegian tanker, Talisman (6700 tons),, which was abandoned 70 miles west of Shimoda, on the east coast of Honshu, after a fire. The Talisman radioed for help, stating that she was fighting a serious outbreak in the engine room. Shortly afterwards the radio' fell silent. Vessels in the neighbourhood included a Japanese tanker, a merchantman, and a tug, all of which answered the call. No casualties are reported. Those rescued included the wife of the Norwegian diplomatic mission chief, Mr Christian P. Reusch.
