NEW ALTITUDE RECORD
American Viking Rocket NZPA—Copyright WASHINGTON, May 12. A United States Navy Viking rocket reached a height of 106.4 miles over the Pacific yesterday, thus setting a new altitude record for Americanbuilt rockets. The Viking was fired from the deck of the navy’s experimental guided-missile ship, Norton Sound, in the vicinity of Christmas Island. The Viking, nearly 50ft long and 30in in diameter, is propelled by liquid oxygen and an alcohol rocket motor. The navy said it was the first time the Viking was launched from a ship.
