AMENDMENT WIPED OUT
South African Population Registration Bill NZPA—Reuter—Copyright
CAPE TOWN, May 11. South Africa’s House of Assembly today wiped out the Opposition amendment which brought a Government defeat yesterday on the Population Registration Bill. The tie in yesterday’s voting led to a recount, which gave the Opposition a one-vote victory on an amendment favouring additional rights of appeal under the Bill.
Today the Speaker ruled the amended sub-section to be “land,” whereupon it was put up for reconsideration by the whole House in committee and was passed without a division—and without the amendment.
