The coffin containing it in Faareveile Church. North Zealand, was opened in 1858, 280 years after his death, since when the body has been on show in an unprotected case. Three patches of mould have now appeared. A “ Save Bothwell ” fund has been launched. Earl Bothwell was widely believed to have been responsible for murdering Earl Darnley. Mary’s former husband. although he was acquitted in court After the murder he abducted the Queen and married her. but abandoned her when Scots nobles rose in revolt and he fled to Denmark where he was imprisoned until his death.
