MILD CONDITIONS

Country Bare Of Feed

While it has kept dry in North Otago this week, conditions have been mild, with almost a total absence of frosts This is probably all to the good, as the country is getting bare of feed. However, some of the early sown green feed crops have done well, but winter rains would be most beneficial to these crops. Wheat.—The increased price for next season has certainly been an inducement to farmers to sow a larger area and merchants report very heavy .deliveries of seed wheat this week. Owing to the fine weather, farmers have had an unbroken period of sowing, and this has put pressure on the stores to maintain supplies of treated wheat. Oats.—With the exception of Duns, there has been practically no inquiry from the North Island this year for oats, and merchants are of the opinion that less wheat should be imported to the North Island and that mixed grains should now be used to enable the country to absorb the surplus barley and oats. If oats have to be carried into next season, the storage position in the South Island may be difficult. - Chaff.— Because of the dry weather it is possible that growers will hold their surplus in case of a winter shortage of feed. Seeds.—Markets remain firm with very few lines on offer. Some lines of cowgrass have been harvested, and the quality of the seed is good. In the meantime. no sales are reported.
