CAPPING DAY SERVICES
Sir, —By granting a passenger licence to the Peninsula Motor Service for the Harington Polnt-Dunedin route, the Transport Department appears to have given this company a monopoly. Wednesday being Capping Day, a large number of residents with children required transport to the city to view the Capping procession. A bus was supplied which seated 26 passengers, and before this bus reached Portobello almost everv seated passenger carried a child on his or her knees. Standing passengers numbered approximately 80. The company could not consider these conditions as “ a safe and comfortable service.” Perhaps if someone else applied for a licence for the above route the residents might expect a more satisfactory service.—l am. etc., Safety. [An official of the Peninsula Motor Service, to whom this letter was referred, said the management would be pleased to consider any complaints made In person.—Ed. ODT.]
Sir, —One wonders why the Railways Department did not cater for the large number of people desiring to visit Dunedin to witness the capping procession. Four carriages only were literally packed before we reached Sawyers’ Bay. Surely those in authority should have been quick enough to realise that many would travel, as it was such a lovely day. It is quite safe to say many fares were not collected owing to congestion. The Road Services cater far better at such a time. Those who prefer the train should also demand a better service.—l am, etc., Wide Awake. Port Chalmers.
