Military Junta Assumes Control NZPA—Copyright PORT-AU-PRINCE (Haiti), Rec. 11.11 p.m. May 10. Dumarsais Estime resigned today as President of Haiti, and was succeeded by a military junta. The junta' announced that order had been restored here after several days of demonstrations in the streets and around Government buildings. The political crisis in Haiti began last month, when the Senate rejected a proposed Constitutional amendment which would have made President Estime eligible to succeed himself. President Estime’s Cabinet resigned last Sunday. The Junta which replaced the President had held power from January to August, 1946. It installed President Estime in office on August 16, 1946. after he had won the Presidential election. The latest switch in executive responsibility came after the army staff, concerned by the increasing disturbances, asked that the old junta return to power to safeguard the lives and properties of the people.
