Truman Would Authorise Use Of Atomic Bomb Again If Necessary

New Zealand Press Association—Copyright Rec. 7.20 p.m. WASHINGTON, May 11. President Truman said today that he would order the use of the atomic bomb again if necessary.. He said the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan saved 200,000 American lives. “I made up my mind that the best way to save the lives of those young men —and also the lives of Japanese soldiers—was to drop those bombs and end the war,” he said. He warned that the United States must not “ retreat into isolationism to save a few dollars.” In an obvious reference to Republican attempts to reduce foreign aid spending, the President said: “As long as I am President we are not going to put dollars above world peace.”
