OVERSEAS SWIMMERS

Tour After Canterbury Games POSSIBLE VISIT TO DUNEDIN Advice was received by the Otago Swimming Centre at its meeting last night of the possibility of overseas swimmers appearing in Dunedin on completion of the Centennial Games in Christchurch, and it was decided to advise the New Zealand Council that the centre was interested in any proposal to bring the overseas swimmers to Dunedin. The New Zealand Council stated that the Canterbury Centre hoped to have competitors from England, France, the United States, Canada and Australia at the Centennial Games, and centres were asked to advise whether they were interested in visits from the swimmers after the Games. The president, Mr JE. C. Isaacs, referred with regret to the death of Mr Douglas Thomson, who had been a member of the centre for 17 years. He had done much to foster the sport in country districts and among the younger swimmers. A motion of sympathy was recorded. Water Polo Competitions Mr E. Sonntag. for the Water Polo Committee, reported that the A Grade competition had been won by the Dunedin A team, and the B Grade competition had resulted in a tie between St. Clair A and Kaikorai.—lt was decided to congratulate the winning teams on their perlormances Distance Swim It was decided to hold a one mile and a-half swimming handicap at the centre hour at the Municipal Baths on Tuesday, May 23. in lieu of the Batt Cup harbour swim which had been postponed owing to unfavourable weather earlier in the season. NZASA Nominations It was resolved to endorse the nomination of Mr W. A. Jenkins for life membership of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, Mr Jenkins was recommended by the centre for life membership last year, but the question of life membership of the association generallv was deferred for one year. it was also decided to nominate Mr D. F. Watson for the position of president of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. Mr Watson is a former president of the centre and held office for two years as vice-president of the New Zealand Association. The centre also nominated Mr Baxter O’Neill, of Christchurch, as secretary, and Mr P. R. Smith, of Christchurch, as treasurer of the association.
