EDUCATION ABROAD

Continental Methods Described Impressions of French education as she saw it in France last year were given by Miss V. M. Barron, lecturer in French at the Otago University, at a meeting of the Dunedin branch of the New Education Fellowship last night. Mrs Belhvood gave her impressions of education in Estonia, Sweden and Russia, The French educational system stressed the value of individuality, and did not attempt to confine the child into a moulded pattern. Instances of how this was achieved through- administration, curriculum and organisation were given. A knowledge of the French language and literature was a prominent feature, and an ability to think analytically was developed through this media. Miss Barron gave examples of differences in teacher training and staff duties which permitted this in school. Mrs Bellwood, who is lecturer in physical education, illustrated the differences between the German, Estonian and Swedish attitudes towards education. Then she contrasted these methods with those of Russia. Mrs Bellwood, who is lecturer in aspects of education, especially in physical education, the Russian people were 20 years behind the Western nations. There were 15 people present.
