FREEDOM OF PRESS

Subject For Discussion At Ottawa IMPERIAL CONFERENCE NZPA—Copyright LONDON, May 9. Freedom of the press will be one of the chief subjects of discussion at the Imperial Press Conference to be held at Ottawa next month, said Sir Harry Brittain, founder of the Empire Press Union, at the annual meeting today. He said the original members of the union had no idea of putting down such a subject for discussion 40 years ago. 11 In those days it was accepted as the principle on which newspapers were brought up—the principle that news and comment should be entirely free. Unfortunately, we have got into a different position toda<3ir Keith Murdoch emphasised the increasing importance of press freedom. He said it was essential that freedom of the press should be extended to all parts of the world. “ We know that a free press means a great deal more than freedom to publish facts,” he added. Colonel J. J. Astor was re-elected president of the union and Lord Iliffe honorary treasurer.
