FARMER’S FIND
Meteorological Equipment BALLOON AND PARACHUTE Special to the Daily Times OUTRAM, May 10. On going round his farm one morning this week, a local farmer, Mr D. Hutton, was surprised to see some distance away what appeared to be a white sheet with a small white box beside it. Closer examination revealed a parachute, portion of a white rubber balloon, and a white box; measuring lOin by Bin by 4in. Attached to the box, which weighed about 31b, was a printed notice stating that the box contained meteorological instruments, had been carried to a height of 12 miles, was released from Invercargill at 1102 hours on May 8, and requesting the finder to return the articles to the nearest post office, after which, if he supplied his name and address on an attached label, he would receive a reward of 5s for his trouble. Mr Hutton, who handed his find to an official at the Outram Post Office, was informed that the box would be forwarded by fragile post to the Director, Meteorological Office, Wellington. As far as can be ascertained, this is the first occasion on which a meteorological balloon has descended in any part of the Outram district.
