NAVAL TRAINING

Reservists From Dunedin COURSE AT AUCKLAND Four 18-year-old youths from Dunedin left the city on Tuesday to join a total of 73 compulsory naval reserve trainees who will enter HMNZS Tamaki on Motuihi Island today to begin a 14-weeks’ training period. The training period is to include a week at sea in one of the ships of the New Zealand Squadron. The programme for the reservist, a navy press release states, has been designed to cover the most comprehensive range of naval subjects to enable the youth to obtain a broad picture of the elements of the navy, its functions and organisation. The first six weeks will be taken up with basic instruction in the reasons for the various naval customs and traditions, elementary seamanship, boatwork, and the layout of a ship. *A second period of seven weeks will be devoted to acquainting the rating with the more specialised duties of various branches of the service. Short courses covering such subjects as gunnery, anti-submarine, engine-room, electrics and communications will be conducted which will give the rating an insight into the component parts of the service. This period of instruction will enable the reservist to show his preference for any particular branch of the service. His ability can also be assessed. During the week at sea, he will be able to see and practise the lessons he has learnt, and commence to find his “ sea legs,” and accustom himself to ship life. He will also be shown how to wear' and stow his gear. Physical fitness, which is recognised to play a large part in personal efficiency, is adequately allowed for throughout the whole training period, and keen competition in sports is encouraged. Recreation and welfare facilities are available in the Tamaki and provision has been made for leave periods “ ashore ” including one long weekend for all reservists. After their training has been completed, the reservists will be posted to their home’ divisions .of the RNZNVR to continue their training.'
