The victim of the outrage is Mr James McPherson, aged 76. Mr McPherson was dozing on his bed and the house was in darkness when two men entered his bedroom and attacked him savagely. They dragged him from his be£ into a passageway, where they continued to assault him. “I was lying in the passage trying to defend myself while the men beat me,” said Mr McPherson. “I kept shouting out for help.” Mr McPherson’s left eye was blackened and his eyebrow was cut. There was also a cut over his left ear, which was badly swollen. His pyjamas were bloodstained. The men, who wore heavy overcoats with the collars turned up, then took a wallet from Mr McPherson’s trousers. which were in the bedroom. Mr McPherson said the wallet contained only some private papers. Something evidently alarmed the men, who made off without searching the rest of the house.
