SUBSIDY REMOVAL

Resignation Of Government Sought : HILLSIDE MASS MEETING « ! A mass meeting of 1100 workers at the Hillside Workshops yesterday decided to call upon the Government to resign because of the recent increase on the cost of living due to the lifting of subsidies. Decisions were also made that no overtime—except in special circumstances—be worked, and that the Federation of Labour and the New Zealand Trade Union Congress should organise a one-day demonstration throughout the Dominion on the opening day of Parliament. The meeting started at lunch time and continued until 1.45 p.m.

This information was contained in a statement given to the Daily Times on behalf of the meeting by Messrs F. M. McLeod (vice-chairman) and E. W. Wilson (secretary), representing the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, and by Messrs V. G. Robinson and N. W. Tasker, representing the Railway Tradesmen’s Association. The following resolutions were passed:— 1. “That this mass meeting of Hillside 'workers vigorously protests against the Government’s further vicious and unwarranted attack on the living conditions of the working people and their dependants. 2 “ That we demand that our National Executive get in'-touch with the Federation of Labour and the New Zealand Trade Union Congress to organise a one-day demonstration throughout the Dominion on the opening day of Parliament. 3 “That we consider the Government has attained the Treasury benches on a policy for the reduction of the cost of living, and having failed to implement such a policy, we call upon it to resign and face the electors on this issue. , „ 4 “That the respective branch officials get in touch with the Otago Trades Council to ascertain what action it proposes taking, and inform it of the action we propose to take 5. “ That no overtime be worked, except plant maintenance, breakdowns and matters affecting public safety.”
