ROXBURGH HYDRO SERVICES

Sir—Having read the article on “ Opening of Shops ” in your issue of May 5, concerning Coal Creek, may I give a, few facts as they exist today? With the exception of the butcher, no business man, returned sold er or not, will collect an order or deliver same to the settlement. This service is all done by the Ministry of Works. X, for one, cannot believe that the project engineer * wants this burden thrust upon his shoulders, broad though they may be. . _ .. The returned business men in Roxburgh suggest that we are reasonably provided with transport. If they consider a 3s cash fare for approximately five miles return " reasonable,’’ I do not. The only shopping service to Roxburgh is on Fridays, and to charter a special bus costs a minimum of £2 10s. . I derive pleasure from seeing the organisations referred to taking hundreds of pounds out of the district each month. I admit they are only a convenience but what a convenience to the people of the settlement. I consider these firms who solicit our business deserve consideration in preferertce to business men in Roxburgh, who supply “ adequate shopping facilities" but no services. Finally, I would like to draw your readers’ attention to the very appropriate cartoon in the same issue, entitled ’ Red Sky at Morning.”—l am, etc., J. Moore.

Sir,—Reading in today’s Daily Times of the claims of the rehabilitated Shopkeepers of Roxburgh concerning the building and running of at the Roxburgh Gorge hydro, many residents of the village are rather surprised at the local suppliers’ eagerness, especially in view' of the hitherto inadequate service and supply to the “works people, some of whom have been frankly told that their business was neither necessary nor desirable. —I am, etc., One of ’Em.
