Sir,—Truly, “ Matilda ” is not so simpleminded as he expects his readers to be. For all his quotations are misquotations. He even misquotes Mrs Boswell when he refers to the two girls she interviewed on * the street. -Hi?'translation -of “ two girls " is “ two married women with children.”, On the other hand, he makes the American lace-making factory much more humane than I had painted it. “Matilda’s” objection to Annabelle Bucar would apply equally to Kravshenko, who forsook his own country and forfeited his citizenship. But Kravshenko is loudly applauded by all the capitalistic world as an accredited authority on Communism. • “ Matilda ” never. , divulges the source of his intimate knowledge of the happenings behind the'iron curtain. Sir,—“ Matilda’s ” 'blast of hate against a great nation that is doing a good job for civilisation will- scarcely be heard amid the din of contending voices for peace or war that are striving to make themselves heard throughout the world. Ever since the war ended the news columns of the daily press have kept up a constant stream of anti-Russian propaganda, which has been growing in volume and intensity until now it has become an octave of great magnitude. Amid this sound and stress Mr Trygve Lie, a good man and true, is about to make -a special effort on behalf of the United Nations to bring about some degree of understanding between East and West, and to cast out the demon of hate that is causing the strife between the great nations of the world. Let us hope he will succeed as such a worthy effort deserves. —I am, etc., Rattar.
