PA CHRISTCHURCH, May 9. The Pope has appointed the Rev. Father Edward Michael Joyce, parish Eriest at Sockburn, to succeed Bishop yons as Bishop of Christchurch. Father Joyce, who is the first priest of the diocese of Christchurch to be elevated to epispocal office, will be the fourth occupant of the See of Christchurch. which was established in 1887 by papal decree. Father Joyce, who is 43 years of age, was born in Lyttelton on June 26, 1907. He pursued his ecclesiastical studies at the Holy Cross Seminary, and was ordained on October 31, 1931. in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament by his uncle, the late Bishop Byrne, then Bishop of Toowoomba, Queensland. In 1941 Father Joyce was appointed chaplain to the New Zealand military forces, and subsequently served with New Zealand troops in Tonga and Fiji.
