NO CUTS MADE
Minister’s Assurance PA CHRISTCHURCH, May 8. “In point of fact, we have made no cuts in grants to boards or other educational authorities,” said the Minister of Education, Mr Algie, today, when a North Island report that he had cut grants for school maintenance to reduce expenditure on education was referred to him. “On the contrary, I have given proper thought to the financial statement made by the Prime Minister and I am doing my best to carry out a policy that is in harmony with that statement. “The estimates of the Education Department are at this moment in the hands of the Government for consideration. It is more than likely that some reductions will have to be agreed to by myself and my department and if that is the case it will be necessary for me to arrange some sort of priority against several headings of expenditure. I firmly believe that this reduction will be of a temporary character.” he added.
