New Australian Destroyer Commissioned
NZPA—Copyright MELBOURNE, May 8. HMAS Tobruk, the first of Australia’s two new Battle class destroyers, will be commissioned today. Her sea trials began last December. The Tobruk was launched at Cockatoo Island, Sydney, in December, 1947. She is a sister ship to the Anzac, at present being fitted out at Williamstown, Victoria, after launching in August, 1948. They are the ( biggest destroyers yet built in the Commonwealth and are designed for peacetime complements of 300 men each.
