SUBURBAN FARES
Increases For Trip Tickets BUS CHARGES HEARINGS Special Correspondent WELLINGTON, May 8. The Railways Department tonight announced new fares for suburban rail journeys in consequence of the announcement of increases by the Minister of Railways, Mr Goosman. The actual fares as between station, and station have not yet been, fully worked out, but the following table shows the new fares per mile on suburban weekly 12-trip tickets and suburban six-trip bearer tickets respectively:—One mile, Is 9d; two miles, 2s 3d; three miles, 3s; four miles, 3s 6d; five miles, 3s 9d; six miles, 4s 3d; seven miles, 4s 6d, eight miles, 4s 9d; nine miles, ss; 10 miles, 5s 6d; 11 miles, 5s 9d; 12 miles, 6s; 13 miles, 6s 3d; 14 miles 6s 6d; 16 miles, 7s; 17 miles, 7s; 18 miles, 7s 3d; 19 miles, 7s 6d; 20 miles, 7s 6d. Six trip, Is sd, Is lOd, 2s 3d, 2s 6d, 3s, 3s 3d, 3s 6d, 3s 9d, 4s 3d, 4s 6d, 4s 9d, ss, ss, 5s 6d, 5s 6d. 5s 9d, 5s 9d. 5s 9d. 5s 9d. Although suburban rail fares are to be increased by 15 per cent, the Railways Department cannot put its bus fares up on a similar basis until authority is received from the Transport Charges Committee, which operates under the Transport Amendment Act. The committee expects soon, however, to receive a series of applications from the department for permission to increase fares in the various' centres. The first of these has been received for the Wellington area. The committee may hear the applications in the centres to which they apply. It is understood that the Pori Chalmers-Dunedin service is early on the list.
